What to Pack for a One-Day Hike
A one-day hike differs from a multi-day one not in the number of items but in their purpose. On a multi-day trip you carry your home on your back. On a one-day trip it's enough to keep the day from being ruined.

Three rules for a one-day outing
People are always closer than you think. So a bulky medical kit and survival gear aren't needed: it's more important to reach transport than to live autonomously in the forest.
Anything weighing more than two kilograms should solve a frequent problem. Items 'just in case' aren't taken on a day hike — they stay at home, and that's fine.
The list is assembled for a specific breakdown. Not 'what if it comes in handy' but 'the tire will definitely puncture, so a spare tube and pump are coming along'.
Repair and protection against breakdowns
- Pump and spare tube — the most common breakdown, it will happen for sure.
- Adjustable wrench — it fixes everything that's come loose: wheel, handlebars, saddle, pedals.
- Chain tool or multitool with one — if the chain breaks.
- Tire levers, if the tire fits tightly.
- Zip ties and electrical tape — for what can't be fixed: tie on something that's fallen off, secure it.
First aid kit
- Adhesive bandages of various sizes — used up fastest.
- Bandage — if a scrape is bigger than a bandage.
- Antiseptic — ointment or iodine sticks.
- Painkiller — in case 'went too far, got a headache'.
Falling off a bike almost always means scrapes on the palms: the body puts its hands forward. This can be treated on the spot, but only if the first aid kit is at hand.
Water and food
Water is the main thing calculated by distance. A liter per day in cool weather, more in heat. If you drink coffee, add water for the coffee: it removes fluid from the body.
Food — according to appetite, but always with a reserve. Bread, cheese, nuts, chocolate. Something that doesn't spoil in heat and doesn't require cooking. A stove isn't needed for a one-day outing, unless you plan to brew coffee on the spot.
Clothing and small items
- Raincoat — you wait out a short rain rather than get wet. Dense, made of polymer.
- Light — a headlamp: the trip may drag on until dark.
- Glasses — from the sun, from stones kicked up by cars, and from branches at eye level.
- Insect repellent — essential in season.
- Charged phone and, if it's your main navigator, a power bank.
- Trash bag — to carry out what you brought in.
What you can leave at home
Tent, sleeping bag, stove, large food supply, heavy tool kit, second pair of shoes. All this is needed when you go overnight. For one day it's extra weight you pay for with speed and fatigue.
How much it all weighs
It usually comes to 4–6 kilograms including water. A guideline for checking: backpack weight shouldn't exceed 20% of your body weight. At 70 kilograms that's 14 kilograms — so even a full kit with a reserve fits in at half.

About a liter per day in cool weather and more in heat. If you drink coffee, add water proportionally: coffee removes fluid.
Usually not: food is taken ready-made. A stove is justified if you plan to brew tea or coffee on the spot.
