You ride into the forest, then the trail turns into such thickets that dragging the bike along is misery. You leave it for the day, go for a walk, come back — it's still there. To make that happen every time, not every other time, you need to hide a bike properly.
The three tiers of trails
In the forest, everything depends on how busy your path is. I split them into three tiers.
The main road. Everyone walks it, always. Anyone can step into the woods for absolutely any reason: a bathroom break, a stroll, helping someone out. Random eyes everywhere — maximum risk of the bike being spotted.
The secondary road. Less risk, but not zero: people stop, some hide things, some just stand aside. There are still plenty of random people.
The third-tier trail. Barely visible, usually leads nowhere or into thickets. That's what you want: for short-term hiding — a day — these spots are perfect.
How to pick the spot
The goal is to hide the bike where nobody walks and there's no reason to be there at all. Signs of a good spot:
Nobody walks there. No trampled ground, no big paths.
Not a scenic spot. People love stopping exactly at scenic points — don't hide there.
Unnoticeable. Nothing that would catch the eye.
Preferably on a slope. People don't like walking slopes — extra energy.
A hill, a drop, a ravine. Ideal: almost nobody climbs there.
How to hide it — the rules
Lay the bike flat. This cuts the silhouette to a minimum — only the handlebar and wheel stick out.
Lock it. Even if someone finds it, it'll be hard to drag away.
Under a tree. If rain comes, the bike is sheltered. There are plenty of trees, so it's the easiest option.
Camouflage with branches. But don't gather them right next to the bike: bare patches around it catch the eye. Take a little, and from further away.
Hiding the handlebar and "splitting" the bike is enough. Lay the frame down, tuck the handlebar — the eye won't lock on.
The rule is simple: a spot with no reason to be there, plus a bike that's flat, locked, under a tree, with a broken silhouette. Then you walk easy without checking every half hour.
